Getting to The Chief


The Chief, a renowned hiking spot in Squamish, British Columbia, is known for its rigorous trails and magnificent views. Located about an hour's drive north of Vancouver, Squamish is the gateway to this adventure. Once in Squamish, signs lead to Stawamus Chief Provincial Park, situated on the town's east side.


Trail Options


The Chief offers various trails ranging from easy to very strenuous. The most frequented path is the Stawamus Chief Trail, a moderate to difficult route taking about four to six hours for a round trip. This trail ascends from the mountain's base via switchbacks through dense forests, offering vistas of the surrounding mountains and Howe Sound.


Preparation for the Hike


  • Footwear: Sturdy shoes are a must.

  • Hydration and Protection: Bring ample water, and consider a hat and sunscreen for sunny days.

  • Safety: Carry GPS, bear spray, and first-aid kit.

The Hiking Experience


  • Forest Path: The initial part of the trail features switchbacks through a forest of Douglas fir, western hemlock, and western red cedar.

  • Wildlife: Stay alert for local wildlife, including bears, cougars, and elk.

  • Trail Junction: About an hour in, a fork in the trail appears. Keep right for the summit.

  • Steep Ascend: The path gets steeper with more switchbacks, demanding care and attention.

  • Diverse Forests: The hike continues through varying forest types, including old-growth cedar and hemlock.

Reaching the Summit


After about three hours of hiking, the summit of The Chief awaits. Here, hikers are rewarded with panoramic views of the mountains and Howe Sound. It's the perfect spot to rest and absorb the stunning scenery.


Descending The Chief


  • Caution: The descent can be as challenging as the climb, requiring careful navigation.

  • Pace: Maintain a steady pace and take breaks as needed.

Post-Hike Recovery


After returning to the trailhead, it's essential to rest and replenish. Reflect on the journey and the spectacular views experienced at the summit of The Chief.
