Accessing the Trailhead
Panorama Ridge offers a breathtaking hiking experience in British Columbia's Coastal Mountains, starting from the town of Squamish, about an hour's drive north of Vancouver. The journey to Garibaldi Provincial Park, located around 30 minutes south of Squamish, leads to the Rubble Creek parking lot. This parking area, about 10 minutes from the park entrance, features pit toilets, a picnic area, and informative maps.
The Trail Experience
The hike begins at the Rubble Creek parking lot, following a well-marked path through diverse forest landscapes. The initial section involves a series of mountain switchbacks, so be ready for a steep ascent. Surrounded by stunning views of snow-capped peaks and deep blue lakes, the trail offers an immersion into the natural beauty of the Coastal Mountains. Hikers pass through varied forests, including ancient cedar, hemlock, Douglas fir, and western red cedar, and should be alert for wildlife such as bears, cougars, and elk.
After approximately an hour, the trail forks. Keep left to stay on the path to Panorama Ridge. This portion includes the steepest part of the hike, with more switchbacks leading up the mountain. The path then opens up to meadows, providing expansive views of the surrounding mountains and valleys.
Reaching Panorama Ridge
Around four hours into the hike, you arrive at the base of Panorama Ridge. Here, adventurers can choose to continue to the ridge's summit or return to the trailhead. The summit climb involves a scramble over loose rocks and scree, demanding caution and steady footing. Upon reaching the summit of Panorama Ridge, hikers are greeted with panoramic views of the Howe Sound and surrounding mountains, a fitting reward for the challenging ascent.
