Location and Overview
Mt. Finlayson, situated in Goldstream Provincial Park, is about a 20-minute drive from downtown Victoria. Known for its steep ascent, the hike rewards adventurers with breathtaking views at the summit.
Starting the Hike
Parking: Begin at Goldstream park's main parking lot.
Initial Route: Cross the bridge over the river and proceed for about 200 meters until reaching a large wooden sign/map.
Trail Direction: Stay to the left of the wooden stairs, continuing up the trail.
Trail Description
Forest Climb: The path rises steeply through lush forest, leading to a canyon.
Canyon and Creek: Navigate down the tree roots into the canyon and cross a small wooden bridge over the creek.
Trail Fork: At the fork, keep left. The trail then ascends steeply through the last forested section.
Mountain Ascent: As you emerge from the trees, the trail continues up the side of the mountain. Bear Mountain Golf Resort becomes visible during this stretch.
Following Markers: On the mountain side, follow the orange markers. This part of the trail offers unobstructed views and is often considered the highlight of the hike.
Approaching the Peak: As you near the peak, downtown Victoria becomes visible in the distance.
At the Summit
Resting Spots: The summit provides various spots to rest and take in the views.
Scenic Views: Look westward for views over the Malahat Highway, and down onto the Goldstream Train Trestle— another popular hike in Goldstream Provincial Park.
Planning for the Hike
Sunset Views: While the sunset from the top is stunning, ensure you allocate enough time for the descent.
Safety: The return journey requires caution, especially if descending during dimming light.
