Crashed WW2 Bomber - Tofino, Pacific Rim National Park

Updated: Jan 25

Directions to the Trail

The hike to the Canso Bomber crash site is an intriguing journey located in Tofino, British Columbia. Starting from Tofino, drive south along the Pacific Rim Highway and turn right at the Radar Hill sign. Parking is available at the Radar Hill turnoff— remember, highway parking is not permitted. Once parked, return to the highway on foot and head right. The trailhead is marked by the 15th telephone pole from the Radar Hill turnoff, identifiable by a black airplane drawing.

The Trail Experience

  • Initial Discovery: A short walk leads to an abandoned building, an interesting spot for exploration.

  • Trail Descent: Continue past the building, where the trail descends. Although once muddy, boardwalks have made this hike more accessible.

  • Historical Crater: About 25 minutes in, you'll encounter a large circular pond, which is actually a crater from the aircraft's detonated explosives.

  • Wreckage Path: Continuing further, fragments of metal wreckage lead up to the remarkably intact remains of the Canso 11007 Bomber, resting in Tofino's lush rainforest.

Historical Background

Tofino played a significant role in Canada's World War II defense strategy, particularly after the 1941 attack on Pearl Harbour. An airfield was constructed here as a precaution against Pacific attacks.

The Canso 11007 Bomber, involved in this hike's history, met its fate on February 10th, 1945. Just after takeoff for Coal Harbour, the aircraft crashed into a mountainside following a power loss in its port-side engine. Pilot Ron Scholes' quick actions led to a controlled crash, saving all 12 people onboard. The wreckage, including a 6-meter crater from the detonated explosives, remains a historical testament to this event and can be seen during the hike.

Preparing for the Hike

  • Footwear: Sturdy shoes are recommended, especially if conditions are wet.

  • Navigation: Keep count of the telephone poles or look for the airplane symbol to find the trail entrance.

  • Safety: Be cautious while exploring the abandoned building and wreckage.

A Hike Through History

This hike offers not only a walk through the natural beauty of Tofino's rainforest but also a journey back in time. The Canso Bomber wreckage serves as a poignant reminder of Canada's wartime history and the resilience of those who lived through it. It's a unique and educational experience for hikers and history enthusiasts alike.
